Six Reasons You Cannot Ignore Your Personal Brand in 2018

Six Reasons You Cannot Ignore Your Personal Brand in 2018

Everyone is familiar why as a business, your brand needs to be consistent and polished for proper positioning. But how often have you stopped to think about how important your PERSONAL brand is? Probably not often enough. Don’t worry – I’m here to get you back on track! 😉

  1. Online Reputation Management

The number one thing I am always amazed at is that people never stop to think about what would happen if someone made a negative remark or review of working with or for you online. We hear a lot about people getting negative reviews  but most of us – businesses AND individuals, are reactive vs. proactive.

As an example. I worked for a financial institution that had been involved with a lawsuit because they failed to catch a hedge fund manager’s fraudulent activity. Of course, before this lawsuit – they had no digital presence except for maybe a web site. When I began working with them, the first 3-4 pages of search results related to them were all about their involvement in this lawsuit. It took me nearly two years of thinking outside of the box to come up with creative ways to bury those news story links.

Unfortunately, If at some point in time you have a falling out or a negative experience with someone who publishes their opinion – if you haven’t been diligent in creating and monitoring your digital presence, it only takes one negative review or article to get picked up by search engines.  When I have clients approach me after these unfortunate events, it will take twice as much work AND time to counteract any damage done. Which is why I strongly encourage people to be proactive and have a reputation management plan in place, vs waiting for a crisis to take action.

  2. Control Your Content & Image

Today, if someone were to search for someone, they’d likely find all of their social media profiles. And we’ve all been told be careful what you say online – right? But I think that’s a “too little too late” warning; I think instead we should be considering that regardless of what we say – we have no control over the social platforms that we use. Which brings me to my next point of – create a space where you can control the content and imagery of how you’re presented online. It’s important you are intentional about the type of content you DO want to be associated with in search engines.

  3. Digital Networking

With a compelling and intentional aligned personal brand you will naturally attract people and opportunities to do business with.  The beauty of it, is the more consistent and intentional you are – the more opportunities will find YOU. With one central presence showcasing your talents & projects you’re associated with, it will make it easy for others to have a clear understanding about who you are and what you stand for – and may even weed out some people or opportunities you wouldn’t be interested in.

  4. Strengthen Your Business

A strong personal brand can pave the way for business success. If people know of you; they’re more likely to do business with you. Some excellent examples would be people like Richard Branson, Gary Vaynerchuck, Marie Forleo, or Mark Cuban. Where would their businesses be without their strong personal brand?

  5. Identify Yourself as an Expert in Your Industry

Having a centralized place where you control the content & context of your message – is crucial to identifying yourself as an expert in your field. What better way to demonstrate your expertise and capabilities? When you have a consistent personal brand it will provide an opportunity for those who are looking for what you have to offer a way to become familiar with you. Providing high value content in your industry will not only identify you as an expert but also help keep you top of mind and may be the deciding factor in someone working with you versus someone else.

  6. Builds Your Confidence

To have a successful personal brand, you must find your authentic voice. It is definitely a process – however the more you share that voice and others are attracted to you, their positive feedback and engagement will boost your self esteem. Though finding your tribe will take time, it’s always better to get started sooner rather than later.

An intentional, well polished personal brand is the key to landing that dream job, build an influential network, gain press visibility or building your own business.
